What is an
open bite?
An open bite is a dental condition characterized by a visible gap between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed. In an open bite, the upper and lower teeth do not make contact with each other when the jaws are closed, leaving an open space between them. This can occur in the front teeth, the back teeth, or both.
Why correct an open bite?
In addition to causing functional problems, an open bite also has an impact on one's appearance.
Jaw joint problems, including wear and tear on the joint
Can encourage unhealthy mouth breathing/dryness
Lisp and impaired speech development
Chewing problems, difficulty biting
What causes an open bite?
Thumb sucking
Prolonged thumb sucking, especially during early childhood when the teeth are developing, can lead to an open bite.
Tongue thrusting
Habitual tongue thrusting, where the tongue pushes against the front teeth when swallowing, can gradually push the teeth forward and create an open bite.
Genetics
In some cases, genetics may play a role in the development of an open bite, with certain individuals being more predisposed to the condition.
