Shapd attachments – What are they and how do they work?
Attachments are small, tooth-colored composite elements affixed to the teeth in cases of complex malocclusions. They enhance the Aligner's ability to exert pressure on the teeth, facilitating faster and more efficient teeth movement. This increased pressure is particularly beneficial for addressing certain issues like tooth rotations or short teeth.
Understanding Dental Composite:
Dental composite is a contemporary material commonly used for dental fillings. It is crafted from synthetic resins mixed with fillers. Composite hardens rapidly under blue light.
Post Aligner treatment, these attachments can be easily removed by your dentist without leaving any traces or causing damage to your tooth enamel.
Attachments for Aligners:
Composition:
Attachments are composed of tooth-colored composite, a synthetic material consisting of biocompatible resins (plastic matrix), quartz, and glass (filler). Silanes securely bind the matrix to the fillers, and the attachments are precision-manufactured with machines.
Number and Placement:
The number of attachments needed varies based on your treatment plan. Some teeth may require extra assistance, while others may not need any attachments at all. The attachment placement is carefully determined.
Necessity:
Attachments aren't required for every Aligner treatment. Your Shapd coordinator will guide you on whether attachments are necessary for optimal force transmission, especially in cases involving strongly twisted or crooked teeth, tilted tooth crowns, or the need to move teeth upwards or downwards.
Attachment Process:
Attachments are securely bonded to the tooth surface using dental composite, ensuring a dry contact surface. Regular checks on the position and fit of attachments occur during the Aligner treatment.
Maintenance and Visibility:
Attachments are transparent in color and blend seamlessly with your teeth, making them nearly imperceptible. They do not damage the tooth surface or enamel during application or removal. Good oral hygiene is essential, and while strongly colored foods can stain attachments and Aligners, proper cleaning helps prevent this. In rare cases, attachments may come loose due to saliva getting between the tooth and composite. If this happens, inform us promptly for a replacement. The attachment process, while intricate, is painless, and any concerns or questions can be addressed by your Shapd dentist..
